Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) & wastewater

Biochemical Oxygen Demand or Biological Oxygen Demand, is a measurement of the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) that is used by aerobic microorganisms when decomposing organic matter in water.

A fundamental requirement of wastewater treatment is the removal of BOD by the bacteria, biomass, or “bugs”.

If wastewater is not adequately treated before discharge to rivers, organic pollution can trigger algal blooms which can lead to the release of toxins and deplete dissolved oxygen.  In severe cases, algal blooms can results in fish kills and contamination of drinking water supplies.

ACTI-Mag for BOD reduction

Boosting anaerobic digestion, ACTI-Mag supports bacteria and speeds up the breakdown of complex organic chains (including proteins, carbohydrates and lipids) into smaller units such as amino acids, sugars and long chain fatty acids. The process reduces the rate-limiting step in the digestion process. This results in improving BOD/COD in the final effluent.

HOW DOES ACTI-MAG WORK?

Unlike caustic or soda ash, which add sodium, ACTI-Mag adds nutrient value (magnesium) into secondary treatment biological processes and returns nutrient to irrigated soils.
