Biochemical Oxygen Demand or Biological Oxygen Demand, is a measurement of the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) that is used by aerobic microorganisms when decomposing organic matter in water.
A fundamental requirement of wastewater treatment is the removal of BOD by the bacteria, biomass, or “bugs”.
If wastewater is not adequately treated before discharge to rivers, organic pollution can trigger algal blooms which can lead to the release of toxins and deplete dissolved oxygen. In severe cases, algal blooms can results in fish kills and contamination of drinking water supplies.
